Fly SoCal

As well as having fabulous sunshine yet mild temperatures, the south of California (or SoCal as it is known  locally), it's a great place to be a free flight pilot. The flying opportunities are one of the reasons I moved here with my family in 2013.

Within an hour of where I live in the small city of Vista driving on big fast freeways are many of the legendary Southern California flying sites, including Marshall, Crestline, Torrey Pines, Laguna, Elsinore and Soboba.

In Southern California the weather is flyable year round, although often later in the day in summer due to hot, dry and gusty thermal conditions.

There are flying sites for every skill level and taste, with coastal soaring (Torrey Pines) reliable evening glass-off soaring sites (Soboba, Blossom), committing and remote XC convergence lines for 100km+  over big peaks and desert (Laguna, Horse) and well developed club scene with club owned landing areas (Marshall, Kagel).

The area even includes one of the worlds classic free flying routes from Lake Elsinore, as featured in the paragldiding coffee table book par excellence, Classic Routes.
