Welcome to Algodonales
Our Spanish school is based in the pretty village of Algodonales in the foothills of the impressive 3,400ft Lijar Mountain in Andalucia, Southwest Spain. This beautiful region is famed for its perfect flying conditions and is host to numerous British, Spanish National and World Hang-gliding championships. A panorama of lakes and mountain ranges provides a dramatic backdrop to the village and a glorious coastline stretches out before it. In the spring, the foothills become a blaze of colour with a variety of fruit crops and sunflowers.
The best flying conditions
Lijar is open to most wind directions, providing the consistently good flying conditions that enable us to fly uninterrupted during the year. One of the reasons behind our success to date is we have what you need, relaible weather, we achieve over 20 days per month of reliable flying, thats three times better than anywhere else in Europe. That´s no wasted trips to the school in traffic, no sitting on hillsides waiting for the wind to drop. The heat from the Azores that builds from the spring, gives rise to a cloud base of between 5,500–8,000 feet and good size thermals. South Easterly winds offer the opportunity for an early morning take-off, but flying can start as late in the day as 2pm, when the southwest launch area is in full sun, and can continue through to sunset.
Continuity for learning
As well as ensuring experienced flyers get the most from their holiday, the reliability of the weather here is crucial to the progress of paragliding beginners. With uninterrupted flying time and stable conditions, those new to the sport can quickly gain confidence and momentum. Coupled with the quality of our instruction, we expect to train you to a level higher than the normal standard, for instance whereas with most Uk schools might get an hour at best flying during a course; with our new reduced Club Pilot weeks we are achieving an average of 3 hours soaring time for students prior to heading back to the UK club scene.
When the flying stops
In your spare time, there is plenty to explore in the local area, which is rich in history. For wining and dining, there are numerous traditional Tapas bars and restaurants and if your interest extends to fine wines, you can visit the biggest sherry company in the world in nearby Jerez. If you have any energy left from your flying exploits, there is a host of fabulous sporting activities to enjoy, including biking, motocross, kite surfing, canoeing, horse riding, climbing or you can swim in a beautiful lake at the foot of Mount Lijar.
An affordable adventure
You will stay in our Eagles Nest self-catering apartment in the village, a smart new 5 bedroom house at the top of the village, which gives you the flexibility of eating when and where you want, around your activities. Flights are generally very cheap and we offer a free airport pick-up for groups. Visit out flying accommodation page for pictures and more information about where you will be staying.
